How to reduce energy consumption in wireless networks? Towards an information theory of energy-saving techniques in radio access networks

As of 2022, yearly data volume has gone up to more than 3 Zettabytes and the traffic continues to rise at a rate of about 25%/year. Energy efficiency has improved over the years but not fast enough, which results in an annual energy consumption growth of 2.5% for the ICT sector. It is becoming increasingly important to reduce energy consumption of wireless communication networks to reduce operational expenses and reach climate ambitions.

This lecture will quantify and clarify by clear examples how drastic energy savings can be achieved, paving the way towards a new information theory of energy-saving techniques in radio access networks.
